François Desmarais and Véronique Picard developed the Tissés serrés (Tightly Woven) project for their Secondary III students, taking an innovative educational approach that puts history at the heart of the creative process. The students began by conducting in-depth research on Canadian history. They then incorporated their findings in the writing of a musical play, portraying various characters and events. This allowed them to develop their knowledge of history, French, and the arts.

Central to the project was the idea that the students should become true architects of their own learning, guided by a historical approach and the attentive supervision of their teachers. They investigated and analyzed period artifacts, objects, and clothing; consulted primary and secondary sources; and visited museums and interpretation centres, examining various original documents, such as the writings of Pierre Boucher, the founder of their city. From this research came the scenes for the play, the fulfillment of a demanding intellectual process.

Under the direction of singer-songwriter Alexandre Béliard, the students created and recorded the song “Pierre Boucher – L’idéaliste”, which was incorporated into the show. On stage, they were accompanied by violinist Marc Angers, a respected figure on the Quebec music scene, bringing to life key episodes in Canadian history. They also built sets and made costumes that remained faithful to the various periods represented, combining historical accuracy and artistic expression in their creative and educational process.

Presented to 1,800 spectators over three performances, Tissés serrés bears witness to the students’ commitment and excellence, showcasing their role as transmitters of memory and creators of culture, and testifying to the power of the vibrant and creative teaching of history.
