The Young Citizens program was created in 2012 as the national program for students participating in Heritage Fairs. After completing an independent research project for a local or regional Heritage Fair, students are invited to transform their project into a short video. The videos are posted online, where Canadians can view them, leave comments, and vote for their favourites. Each year, the top participants are selected to travel to Ottawa to have their work honoured as part of the Canada’s History Forum.
The Young Citizens program encourages inquiry and historical thinking, and provides students with the opportunity to engage with museums, historic sites, historians, and family members. Since 2012, more than 1,100 student videos have been created for the Young Citizens program.
We invite you to meet our Young Citizens, watch their videos, comment on their amazing work, and cast your vote! Visit CanadasHistory.ca/Youth/YoungCitizens to discover the diverse stories of Canada's past.
Young Citizens is administered by Canada’s National History Society, with the support of the Government of Canada, Canada Life, and the McLean Foundation.
