Reconciling the Past in the United Kingdom

Peter Furtado is the former editor of History Today magazine (1998–2008). He conceived the Cassell Atlas of World History (1998) and The Histories of the World: How Their Identities Were Formed (Thames & Hudson, forthcoming). At History Today he instituted prizes for the best historical documentary on TV (in conjunction with the Grierson Trust) and for the best undergraduate dissertation (in association with the Royal Historical Society). In 2009 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by Oxford Brookes University for his work in promoting interest in history. He is also working as a web strategy consultant at the Bristol-based company SiftGroups, helping publishers and enthusiast societies come up with new ways of making the Internet pay.
