Safer Shores

Fifty years ago, Canada opened its arms to thousands of Vietnamese fleeing war and persecution. In the aftermath of the Vietnam War, more than 60,000 refugees arrived from Indochina (Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos) between 1975 and the early 1980s, often making perilous escapes by sea. Many did not survive. Canadians from coast to coast, including faith and grassroots groups as well as private sponsors, played a pivotal role in resettling families and helping them rebuild their lives.
Prior to 1975, only a few hundred Vietnamese were living in Canada. Today, that community has grown to more than 240,000, contributing richly to every aspect of Canadian life — from business to education to the arts to public service. Their journey stands as one of Canada’s proudest humanitarian efforts and a powerful example of successful refugee integration.
In recognition of Canada’s contribution to refugee protection, the country received the Nansen Refugee Award by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on Nov. 13, 1986 — the only time an entire country has received such an honour.
