This ornate liquor stand and decanter was inscribed with the words “Presented to Chief Factor John Rae by the Officers of the Hudson’s Bay Company attached to the McKenzie River District as a token of their respect and esteem.”

Rae took charge of the Mackenzie River District at Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories, in 1849.
