A New Look for our Flagship Magazine

Canada’s History builds on a proud past with a freshly updated approach.
Posted September 26, 2005

A magazine only makes it past the century mark if readers love it. Our award-winning Canada’s History is proof. From its origins as a Hudson’s Bay Company newsletter through its days as The Beaver to the publication you enjoy today, Canada’s History has responded to changing times with stories and design that have made it the country’s most widely read history magazine.

In the upcoming Winter 2025 issue, editorial director Jacqueline Kovacs and art director James Gillespie are taking another step in the magazine’s evolution. You’ll notice a more open feel to the pages, with a mix of feature story lengths and attractive use of design elements.

“The stories are as compelling and deeply researched as always,” Kovacs says. “We’re still providing great writing on all kinds of subjects from Canada’s past. Now they’re showcased in a way that’s even more inviting.”

Your history. Your inbox.

With 7 uniquely curated newsletters to choose from, we have something for everyone.

The magazine’s new look makes it even more enjoyable to read, Gillespie says. “The goal was to create a more elegant and contemporary look and feel. We’ve done that by choosing a type that strikes a balance between grace and gravitas in headlines and a more dynamic use of white space throughout.”

Longtime readers and those who are just discovering the magazine will also enjoy new departments spotlighting food history and restoration of buildings, neighbourhoods and landscapes. Journalists, historians and talented writers of all kinds will continue to contribute the feature stories they’re passionate about — the ones that help us understand each other and our country better with each issue.

“Canada’s history is endlessly diverse and captivating,” Kovacs adds, “so Canada’s History should be, too.”

The Winter 2025 issue of Canada’s History also marks the start of a new quarterly publishing schedule. The amount of content won’t change; the new, bigger issues will bring readers the same number of pages in a year while reducing mailing costs.
