North American professional women’s hockey got a massive boost on Jan. 1, 2024, when the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) played its first game. After spending years on teams that paid very little — or paid nothing at all — women hockey players now had a good home.

Karissa Donkin’s book on the league’s creation provides a deeper understanding of what it means for current and future players. Donkin, a sports reporter, has crafted a readable story that will engage even casual hockey fans.
