Gabriel Dumont Beginning to the End

A presentation about the life of Gabriel Dumont, political figure and Metis leader.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most Interesting and my favorite topic, as mentioned in the previous question, the Battle of Batoche. I just found the Battle of Batoche such a rich part of history to learn about that I wanted to gather all the information as possible. My favorite part about learning this topic was how Gabriel Dumont had led the Metis to approach the situation.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

In these past few months I have been learning more about Metis culture and history, which I have found a very interesting topic. If I could share one thing that I have learned it would be the three battles in my presentation, specifically the Battle of Batoche. the battle of Batoche was my favorite topic to learn about. Even though the Canadian soldiers took the victory, I loved learning about how the Metis approached.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

My project was created so that I was able to learn about the culture and my great uncle, comparing how different our lives makes me realize the difference between us. Yes I am related to him but we live such different lives. Gabriel was a huntsman, which means that he would hunt for his food and to make a living, but nowadays I could walk to grocery store and pick up food without having to spend that time searching. Gabriel also had little to no education, but I am in an amazing school which gave me the ability to do this project. So looking back our ways are much different then what they could have done. Its been 107 years since Gabriel has been alive and the way of living has changed so much since those times.
