History of the Toronto Stock Exchange

My project dives into the history of the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) from its early beginnings on Bay Street in Toronto, through all the major ups and downs, right up to the current time.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I have learned, by looking back at the history of the TSX, that we should never panic. Stocks will always rise and fall, but the market will always trend up in the long run.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

The most interesting thing that I've learned through my project is that the TSX has always been a world technological leader. They were the first exchange to close their trading floor and move to an entirely electronic trading system.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Our lives today are somewhat similar to those who lived through the 1929 market crash. In both scenarios the markets crashed and the economy crumbled. The difference between the two crashes, however, is that this time, we have experience in dealing with such a thing. Hopefully we will learn from the lessons of the past, recover more quickly, and avoid another Great Depression scenario.
