The Story of the Century

The Story of the Century is about the life of a Soviet spy named Igor Gouzenko. Igor Gouzenko had stolen documents from the Soviet Union which showed that the Soviets were planning to take over some parts of Canada since they have an Ottawa embassy to have officers work in.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most interesting thing i learned about my topic is that a person who is loyal to their country (Igor Gouzenko) betrayed them for the good of another country (Canada) to do what was right by alerting Canada that the Soviets were spying on them.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learned that the Soviet/Russian and Canadian friendship has not always been very positive, by having events such as the Cold War and the Gouzenko Affair.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

I would say that their is more freedom in Canada and Russia than there was back in the time period of Igor Gouzenko because there were anti Soviet policies which meant no Soviets allowed in Canada.
