Residential Schools

Residential Schools were originally Christian churches that the government supported in an attempt to both educate and convert Indigenous children. Residential schools became an enduring phenomenon, institutions where built all over Canada. The purpose of the schools was to get rid Indigenous children of their culture.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most interesting thing I learned was that this didn't end a long time ago. The last school was shut down in 1996.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I think an important thing I learned while looking into this topic was that every one is different and we should not separate or try to change the people who are different we should celebrate the differences.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

I think my life is much more privileged and have much more opportunities ahead of myself. I feel so heartbroken that these kids weren't given the same childhood and luxurious and most children today.
