The Beaver Wars

A story of the conflict between the Haudenosaunee tribes and the Huron Wendat and Algonquin tribes as well as the French.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I thought it was interesting to learn that the different tribes had trade alliances with the English and French and traded furs for things like guns and ammunition.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I learned that this long war was very gruesome. The Haudenosaunee kept control of the fur trade but many lives were lost and some indigenous tribes were destroyed. In the end the fur trade collapsed and European disease was spreading. All the tribes were weak. 38 tribes signed a peace treaty with the French and the Beaver Wars ended.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Today fur is not a popular or real money-making trade item. Also the Indigenous tribes in Canada are not as large and powerful as they were then.
