Immigration in Canada

People choose to immigrate to Canada for many reasons. Some being looking for a better life, better schooling, because of famine, war and persecution in their home countries. I have a rich family history tied to immigration. Both my great great grandfather and my great grandparents immigrated to Canada.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I have learned why people chose to immigrate in the past , especially why the people in my family chose to make Canada their home. I have also learned why immigration is still important today. Our county is made better by the cultures and people who chose to immigrate and make Canada their home. I have learned how long the process can be to immigrate to Canada.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

Learning about my families immigration stories was really interesting. My great great grandfather chose to learn to lose his Irish accent because he knew he would more likely get work in Canada without it.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

I am very lucky to live in a country like Canada. I am proud that my family decided to immigrate to Canada and become Canadians. My life is pretty good compared to a lot of the people who are immigrating to Canada today. I hope that their future generations feel as lucky as I do about their choices to immigrate.
