The only woman who played in the NHL - Manon Rhéaume

This project goes into depth about the life and struggles of a young girl named Manon. The main focus will be her NHL career and her lifelong passion for hockey.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

Manon was the first woman to ever play in the NHL. As a matter of fact, she played one of the most elusive positions in the game - the goalie. She actually ended up starting a game for the Tampa Bay Lightning.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I want other Canadians to realize the opposition faced by young girls like myself in doing the things we love, such as hockey. It is very important to me for women and girls to have their fair chance at the same sports as other boys. I want everybody to be equal.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Girls such as myself have much more freedom to play hockey. I view it as a privilege that girls such as Manon were not given, unfortunately. Girls today play hockey with boys much more often than before, due to the work of Manon.
