Victory at Vimy Ridge

My project is on the Battle of Vimy Ridge. I explore the history behind the battle as well as the sacrifice of the soldiers, including my Great Great Grandfather, indigenous people and women.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I learned about the important contributions of indigenous people and women to World War One. I was also able to learn more about my family history, and particularly my Great Great Grandfather who served in the Canadian Army and died from wounds received during the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

There are many things that can be learned from the courage the Canadians showed at the Battle of Vimy Ridge. Throughout the battle, and as their fellow soldiers were injured or killed, the soldiers never gave up. The Canadian soldiers were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice to attain victory.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

The lives of my Great Great Grandfather and the other soldiers who served were miserable. During the war many lived in trenches where the mud was up to their knees and the air was brutally cold. My life today is one of comfort and safety, of peace and warmth. It is important to remember that the reason I have the life I do is because of the sacrifice made at Vimy Ridge 100 years ago.
