Emily Stowe

My project is about the life history of Emily Stowe. She broke gender barriers, and helped with the women's suffrage movement.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I have learned about the sacrifices that the suffragists made for the freedom that we have today. The women in the eighteenth century were considered property of their fathers, brothers, or husbands. The pioneering women went through many things like being denied by schools to being ridiculed by men.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learned that Emily Stowe played a huge part in the women's suffrage movement. She established the first suffrage club, and participated in an all female mock parliament. She also pioneered in two different male dominated professions.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

The lives of women in the eighteenth century was much harder that the lives today. Now, we have the ability to vote no matter our gender, race, or colour. We take all these laws and rights for granted when we should be thinking about the suffragists who fought for this right. In comparison, we have a much more easier life with gender equality, and schools that females are able to attend.
