James Naismith - The Inventor of Basketball
My project describes how and when James Naismith invented basketball. I also discuss details on James Naismith's early years, how basketball has changed over the years, and the basketball hall of fame.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
The game of basketball has changed a lot over the years. I thought it was very surprising to hear that James started playing basketball with a soccer ball. The orignial peach basket evolved into the basket of today.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
James Naismith is a very determined individual who never gives up. When he struggled in school, he quit playing a few sports and focused on his studies. This allowed him to graduate in 1883 and enter McGill University in Montreal. He taught physical education which helped him think of ideas for a new sport - basketball!
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
My favourite sport is basketball. Without James Naismith, who knows if the game would have been invented. If it was invented by someone else, the rules may have been very different and the game may not have been as fun. I'm very thankful James invented the game of basketball.
