The Third Wave of Ukrainian Immigration

My project is about the 33,000 Ukrainian settlers who immigrated to Canada between 1946-1962. It explains there tough, long journey, why they came to Canada, and what they found in Canada. It is in memory of the 125 year anniversary of a Ukrainian immigration.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most interesting thing I have learned was the true story of how my grand-father came to Canada. Also how my story related to the story of others was very interesting. I loved hearing those stories.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learnt that life in the past was not easy. Many Ukrainian people suffered deeply. They fled there country and that took a lot of courage. You always have to have courage and hope, even when it is tough.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Life today is related to the life of my great-grandmother in the way that back then it was the Ukrainians who where immigrating, but today it is the Syrians who are fleeing. This time, though I am the Canadian. Instead of my family immigrating to Canada and the Canadian people helping us, it is my chance to help the newcomers.
