Castle Butte

Castle Butte is a 70 meter high relic formed in the last Ice Age and is located just two hours south of Moose Jaw near the U.S. border. Famous people, soil and weather in the Big Muddy Badlands will be summarized.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The fact that famous people like the Sioux chief Sitting Bull and also the famous outlaw Sam Kelly roamed in the area and helped shape the history of this landmark.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I have learned that Castle Butte is more than a fun sand castle to climb and enjoy. It is a historical landmark which was even used as a home for the Northwest Mounted Police. When we enjoy scenic sights such as Castle Butte it is worth our time to research them so we can see them in a totally different light in the future.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

My life today is much simpler since we use cars for transportation rather than horses. Technology such as phones and computers did not exist in the times of Sitting Bull or Sam Kelly. Stealing horses is a thing of the past and people now steal cars, stereos, jewelry, etc.
