Frank Slide: Dan McKenzie

My project was about the Frank Slide at Turtle Mountain in Alberta.  I highlighted what one of the miners named Dan McKenzie did while he was buried in the slide and how some people survived.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I learned lots, most interesting was the whole thing only lasted 100 seconds when the mountain came down. It was so fast but there was so much rock that moved like water coming down. It might have been avoided if the miners didn't work in the weakest part of the mountain.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

People don't know much about history in Canada in Alberta. People do not know very much about the Frank Slide. Lots of people drive past it or see pictures of it but they don't know the whole story behind it.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

I think I have a much better life than those people did. The life of the miner was hard with the dust and toxic fumes they were breathing in. I think it's better because we have medicines to help with that.
