A Nation is Born: Canada's Victory at Vimy Ridge
My project is about the WWI battle of Vimy Ridge, which was fought and won by Canadians, and how that victory impacted Canada as a nation.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
The most interesting thing that I learned about the battle of Vimy Ridge, is how Canada became a respected nation because of the victory. I researched many Canadian soldiers, who had important input into the strategic planned victory of Vimy Ridge. The sacrifice of Canadian soldiers in capturing Vimy Ridge was so important in WWI, that France gifted the land where the epic battle occurred, to Canada and built a beautiful memorial to commemorate the fallen soldiers.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
Although WWI is celebrating it’s 100th year anniversary this August, Canadians, still feel the benefits of battles fought and won by the Canadian Soldiers. The world could be a completely different place if it were not for the Canadians who fought for our freedoms in WWI. The battle of Vimy Ridge was the first time that Canadians celebrated victory, and mourned their dead, together as a nation.
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
I am really lucky to live in Canada. In 1914, there were Canadian soldiers who were in their late teens that served Canada in the military. Some thought they were going to Europe for a short time to see the world. Many Canadian families suffered devastation when their loved ones did not return home after the war. Our community has never had to deal with massive tragedy and loss like in WWI.
