Archway to The North
Short 4 minute movie about the original Arch/Gateway and the important roles they played in North Bay's history. The documentary provides interesting information about the Arch and Gateway, featuring 1920's music in the background.
What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?
North Bay was labelled "The Gateway to The North" long before there was even a gateway structure. Even before colonization in the 1600s the First Nations knew of the importance of North Bay's geographic location.
What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?
I learned many important lessons. First, the Gateway was built before the Arch. The Arch located in Lee Park, North Bay is not the original. Geographically, North Bay played an important part in travel across Canada, namely the Canadian Fur Trade.
How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?
There are many differences between the 1920s and 2014. Today there would be no reason to have an actual gateway to ensure safety of our resources and the people travelling north. The technologies that exist today help keep track of people and our resources at the touch of a finger.
