The Life and Times of Vere Beck

Vere Beck is my ancestor who immigrated to Canada in 1813.  He and his wife were the first settlers in Guernsey Cove, Prince Edward Island.  My project covers his life and all the notable events that occur.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I think the most interesting thing that I learned is that he was the very first person to live in Guernsey Cove. I think that was a really cool fact about Vere. I also think the number of Vere's descendants in Canada today.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I learned that it is actually really important to research and learn about who you have descended from and their story. Vere worked really hard and sacrificed a lot to immigrate, with his family to PEI. I didn't really know anything about him and I am very glad that I decided to learn more about him this year as my Heritage Fair project.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

I think that Vere's life was much more difficult and involved much more sacrifice and hard work. He gave up his family and career to come to Canada. A sacrifice like that would not be made today by me. My life is much more easy and comfortable than his was.
