Prince Edward Island Provincial Heritage Fair

Province House National Historic Site

My project describes the architecture and history of Province House National Historic Site. I also describe the important events that occurred in Province House National Historic Site, such as the historic Charlottetown Conference that took place from Sept 1-9, 1864.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most interesting thing I learned about my topic is how the Canadian delegates joined the Charlottetown Conference, which was intended to discuss Maritime Union in 1864. The Canadians encouraged discussions for a Canadian Union. This led to further meetings in Quebec and London. The provinces joined Canada at different times, however, Charlottetown became known as "the birthplace of Canada."

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I learned that there is a lot of history in Province House that I was glad to learn and have the opportunity to share with visitors and judges that I met. I also learned that the history of Canada is very, very interesting to learn. Going to Province House and being in the same room where the Charlottetown Conference was held was very special. It is like I was there at the meetings.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

We are very lucky to have heat, electricity and be able to travel freely by car, plane or bus. People in 1864 used gasoliers and fireplaces with wood or coal for heat and lights. They also travelled by ship, horse or horse and carriage. Their dress and lifestyle seemed more complicated and formal as well.
