Halifax Explosion

My project describes the event that happened on December 6, 1917 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and the effect it had on Canadians and their way of life.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

That after the explosion there were many people who survived, which is amazing since the explosion shattered windows 50 miles away. The explosion then sent the half ton anchor of the Mont Blanc 2 miles into the woods of Halifax. At the same time, it sent a gun barrel 3 miles across Dartmouth.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

No matter how overwhelming the event is, the important thing is that people come together and help over come the obstacles. People from as far as Massachusetts aided in the relief effort and continued for 15 years.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

Nowadays we have more effective recources and medical aid if a tragedy like this ever happened. Train and boat was the only way of transporting medical aid to Halifax. Since there was very little medicine back in the day, people coud die from a simple infection.
