Timothy Eaton - The Merchant Prince

Timothy Eaton was a man of faith, family, and success. He made it possible for future generations of Canadians to rely on purchases made at retail stores.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

One of the most interesting things that I learnt was that he started the 'set prices' trend (no more bartering or trading), and later on created the catalogue. He made sure that employees were treated well, and that they had time with their families. Also, Timothy Eaton had the guarantee "Goods satisfactory, or your money back".

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

Some important lessons that I have learnt is to rely and trust in God to help you make a difference in this world. Timothy Eaton did just that and created a huge retail empire.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

My life today is filled with being able to shop at stores, and not have to REALLY worry about whether the item is worth the price or not. I am able to return items to stores, and, when I was younger, I looked through catalogues and wished for items from it. Back then, they would be wary of what they bought, trading was a skill you had to learn, and to go to a store, if you lived in a rural community, would be very difficult, and would cost you money. Timothy Eaton made our lives easier, and I am proud that he was a man of faith as well.
