The War of 1812

My project is on the War of 1812. I examine the causes as well as two of the major engagements of the early part of the war. To wrap up I look at the impact of the war and a Canadian heroine.

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

The most interesting thing I learned about my topic was the way Brock tricked the Americans into surrendering at Detroit. I also found it exciting how the Shannon was able to overcome the more powerful American frigate Chesapeake.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

I wanted all Canadians to know how important the war is to our heritage and that if the Americans had won Canada would not exist today. During my research I learned about several heroes of the Canadian cause such as Brock and Tecumseh as well as Laura Secord. I am proud to be Canadian because we faced such incredible odds to survive as a nation in 1812 and we were successful.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

People around today are spoiled because we don't have to worry about an invasion from the United States. Also, it's interesting how things can get out of hand so quickly today in the affairs between nations just like they did in 1812.
