For this project our inquiry question was: Why was WW 1 so important to seeing Canada as a country?
Final response to our inquiry question: For the first time in Canadas history it was more independent and known world wide. Canadas sacrifices, contributions, independence and bravery will forever be recognized by Canadians across the world.
The main events of ww1: The Ypres, Somme and the battle of Beaumont-Hamel, are the three most significant battles that Canada was relevant in.
Important people: Thomas Ricketts, VC.
Thomas worked as a fisherman in White Bay, Newfoundland, before his 18th birthday in 1918, he had earned a Victoria Cross, thanks to his courage he successfully captured several machine guns and German prisoners. Most importantly his actions saved the lives of many of his fellow newfoundlander soldiers. For that he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
John Shiwak an Inuit soldier. from his experience with hunting & trapping, he was quickly seen as one of the best Canadian snipers/scouts in ww1.
Another brave soldier was Wilfrid Douglas Arye, Wilfrid was the youngest of 4 Ayre cousins and brothers who died on July 1st 1916 during the battle of Somme. At the age of 20.

What is the historical significance of your topic?
The historical significance of world war 1 for Canada was, it helped us gain more independence it allowed us to demonstrate our abilities to the rest of the world. Some of the long term in packs for the soldiers who survived the first world war are traumatic memories of some of the things they saw and lived through. Also, permanent injuries sustained. Canada as a whole faced many changes after the war like…
The army after the war, was stronger than when we first went into the war, we only had a tiny standing army, a two-ship navy and no form of air force. After the war 620,000 men and women had risked their lives for our country’s freedom.
Why did you choose this topic?
Domka: I chose this topic because I thought it would be interesting to learn about the sacrifices our country made in the first world war. The changes and challenges they faced. Because of them our country is now free and for that I will be forever thankful.
Alexi: I chose this topic because the sacrifices our country made just for us are amazing. There are so many people in Canada that the soldiers didn’t even know but still, they fought for four whole years risking their lives for Canadas future.
