The Battle of Vimy Ridge, fought in April 1917, was a pivotal moment in Canadian history, symbolizing the nation’s emergence and independence. During World War I, the Germans were in a stalemate with the French and British, while Russia was on the verge of exiting the war due to revolution. The French appointed General Robert Nivelle to launch attacks near the Aisne River, while the British created diversions around Arras. Canada was tasked with capturing Vimy Ridge, which would give them the high ground and serve as a diversion. On April 9th, all four Canadian divisions advanced, and by April 12th, the Fourth Division captured "the pimple," the highest point, forcing the Germans to retreat. Vimy Ridge became a symbol of courage and sacrifice, solidifying Canada’s national identity and marking its emergence as a distinct, independent nation on the world stage. It marked the birth of Canadian nationalism, as the victory under Canadian command signified Canada's growing independence from Britain. The battle also showcased innovative military tactics, such as the creeping barrage and meticulous planning, which minimized casualties and contributed to future military strategies. While Vimy did not immediately break the stalemate of trench warfare, it weakened German defenses and boosted Allied morale. The political and social impact was profound, fostering Canada's autonomy and highlighting the human cost of war, with over 3,500 Canadians killed. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial, completed in 1936, stands as a lasting tribute to those sacrifices. The battle also influenced future military doctrine and international relations, contributing to the broader Allied victory in World War I and shaping the geopolitical landscape in its aftermath. This was more than a battle, it was a beacon of hope.

The Battle of Vimy Ridge: the assault - The National …

Each of these websites and images have greatly impacted my research. There are always many sources online on the internet, personally i always believe in checking other sources. Some sources come from direct messages by commanders and some sources are encyclopedias. For me checking the direct source by one of the commanders greatly changed and impacted my research. It really showed the tough time and how hard they had to work for their win, which isn't listed in regular websites, greatly impacting my thoughts and way of research.

What is the historical significance of your topic?

The first time in Canadian history all four divisions of the Canadian corp fought together to claim the Vimy Ridge, and were successful. Later Vimy Ridge was no longer known for the fighting it was known for what it symbolized, bravery, teamwork and independence. These words are why we should remember the battle. Many soldiers went into war for the sake of our future and we must respect and honour what they have done for us. The battle demonstrated the effectiveness of Canadian soldiers throughout WW1 and contributed to Canada becoming a Nation. Vimy Ridge proved we didn’t need the British. or be in their shadow. Canada showed many countries their formidable combat skills, strategic plans and bravery. Prime Minister Robert Borden knew that it was time for Canada’s independence from Britain and pushed his hardest to achieve this. Thanks to the battle we were closer to becoming our own nation. Canada was able to demonstrate the effectiveness of new tactics for future wars, inspiring many to join the army, and make an impact. Canadian National Vimy Memorial which is located in France was made to honour all soldiers who passed during the battle, especially those who died in France and didn’t get a grave in Canada.

Why did you choose this topic?

Currently as we all know Canada is witnessing a tough situation due to the economic and political environment, thereby impacting Canadians trust in its country. I've created this project to remind all Canadians how great Canada is and the capabilities we have. I want to spread encouragement and awareness for the generations to come about Canada's strength and integrity. The soldiers in the battle of Vimy Ridge didn't only fight for our freedom, they also fought for Canada’s future, and it is important for us as Canadians to remember this important piece of history, where Canada proved its capabilities in the eyes of other nations.
