In Talk Treaty to Me, Sara Komarnisky and 2025 Governor General’s History Award winner Crystal Gail Fraser explain how legal and political systems in colonial as well as present-day Canada have been created and used to justify occupation of Indigenous Lands, including the elimination and assimilation of Indigenous Peoples.

Using Australian scholar Patrick Wolfe’s framework of settler colonialism, the authors describe how this form of oppression is a “structure not an event.” The book’s biggest strength is its poignant writing, which helps lay bare the complexity of colonial structures and demands urgent change.
