Collective States

Worlds of Photography at the AGO

Reviewed by CH staff Posted May 12, 2026

It may seem as though photography has always been part of the Art Gallery of Ontario — and it has been for more than a century — but its photography department is just 25 years old. Collective States celebrates that quarter-century milestone. The book, edited by that department’s curator, Sophie Hackett, contains a generous selection of gorgeous images and tells a nuanced story of the people connected with the medium — both photographers and curators — and its impact.

Collective States is also a history of an institutional response to taking pictures. Is it art or not? Twenty-five years ago, the AGO officially decided that it is.
