My project focused on the important stories in Gander, such as Ralph the dog and the religious acceptance of Islam and Judaism of the predominantly Christian. Claude Elliott, the former mayor, was a person of major importance during the event. To answer my inquiry question, I have concluded that we as a society need to learn to accept and embrace differences between our fellow humans. We also need to realize that superficial differences, such as race or Gander, are not as important as the community and tradition that connects us. Canada has an extremely rich and long indigenous culture. We also have a strong French culture in Canada that we should also find pride in.

What sources and evidence did you consult for your project? What different perspectives did they provide on your topic?

I watched and reviewed the well-researched and accurate Broadway play “Come From Away”. I also read the CBC article on Mayor Claude Elliott and his career.

What is the historical significance of your topic?

The short-term impacts were some structural and economic changes in Gander. Having 7,000 “guests” with no time to prepare would lead to some major changes. As for the long term, there have been very limited negative and positive effects besides putting Ganbder on the map for a lot of people.

Why did you choose this topic?

After doing some minor research into the topic, I was able to make a meaningful connection to the political state of Canada right now and the social issues being dealt with.
