Reconciling the Past, Finding a New Path

In this presentation, Jock Martin and Heather Ragot share how their students went beyond pan-Indigenous narratives to understand the unique experiences and cultures of different Indigenous groups in Canada.

They brought together their history and language arts students for an interdisciplinary investigation on the history and legacy of colonialism in Canada. Students studied primary and secondary resources to write and publish a book called Reconciling the Past, Finding a New Path.

This presentation was part of the Making Big Stories Personal panel at the 12th Canada's History Forum, Small Stories, Big Ideas, held on January 19, 2020.

Governor General's History Awards Winner Jock Martin and Heather Ragot are high school history and English language arts teachers at St. John’s-Ravenscourt School in Winnipeg, Manitoba. They are recipients of the 2019 Governor General’s History Awards for Excellence in Teaching.
