Fair address: Kingston Regional Fair

Project: Kingston Art History Tours

Welcome to Kingston Art History Tours! On this tour you will learn about the importance of art in Kingston, and that one of Kingston's artists was called a Father of Canadian Art, while another's paintings were featured on greeting cards all over the world. On this tour, you will not only be entertained, but you will hear from the artists themselves, and be the first to view a series of original paintings that I created to honour these artists and their techniques!

What was the most interesting thing you learned about your topic?

I learned a number of very interesting things from my topic. I learned that Daniel Fowler, a farmer from Amherst Island who painted animals and landscapes, became one of the Founding Fathers of Canadian art, and that the paintings of David Brown, another Kingston artist, were featured on greeting cards all over the world. Lastly, I also learned that art is very important to the local culture and economy of Kingston.

What important lessons have you learned that you want to share with other Canadians?

One of the most important lessons that I learned was that art in Kingston is a key element to our local economy and growth. Additionally, Kingston's artists have had a significant impact on Canadian art. Lastly, I learned that artists use different techniques to create their paintings. For instance, Beth ten Hove uses her hands to paint her serene waterscapes, while David Brown used both under and over painting to create his vibrant images.

How would you compare your life today to the lives of those studied in your project?

In the past, artists painted more as a hobby than as a profession. For instance, Daniel Fowler was a lawyer and farmer for many years, before becoming a painter. Today's artists, however, like Beth ten Hove, are career artists. Finally, nowadays, people from all over the world can buy an artist's work through the internet and not just from a local gallery making the impact of our local artists much more widespread.

Hi Evan! You have created a very fascinating video. First of all, I thought your topic was very original because it showcased some of Kingston's local artists instead of focusing on more well-known Canadian figures. I thought the interviews were extremely valuable, as you were able to showcase the artists and/or their descendants, and this really made your video relatable. I also thought it was very effective the way you framed your narrative with a "tour" - very creative! Since I am not very knowledgeable about art, sometimes I felt a bit lost when you talked about the style; it might have been nice if you explained what those terms meant, or perhaps specifically applied them to your own paintings (or to the paintings of the artists) so the audience would have an example of what you meant. Overall, the video clearly shows hard work and dedication, and it turned out really well! Nice work! (My favourite painting of yours is still the J. David Brown impression!)
