Canada’s History magazine captured four nominations and three awards, including magazine of the year, at the annual Manitoba magazine awards.
The 91-year-old magazine also took home the awards for best non-fiction feature, for a story titled “Isolation” by Winnipeg investigative journalist Cecil Rosner, and for best editorial package, for a series of stories that examine the history and impact of shell shock on successive generations of Canadians soldiers. Writers for the shell shock package include award-winning authors Tim Cook, Ted Barris and Dennis Duffy. Photographers Marianne Helm and Thomas Fricke also contributed. The package was edited by Mark Reid, Nelle Oosterom, Beverley Tallon and Phil Koch, with layout by Michel Groleau, and the publisher of Canada’s History magazine is Deborah Morrison.
The Maggie Awards, presented by the Manitoba Magazine Publishers Association, celebrate excellence in the Manitoba magazine community. This is the second time in three years Canada’s History has won magazine of the year. The magazine was also nominated in the best non-fiction category for the feature “Take Me to Havana” by Maria Amuchastegui.
In addition, Canada’s History garnered two nominations for the upcoming Western Magazine Awards: for magazine of the year and for best column. The latter nomination recognizes the regular column by University of British Columbia history professor Tina Loo. Rosner's article "Isolation" has also been named a finalist in the magazine category of the Canadian Association of Journalists award for outstanding investigative journalism.
