Canada’s History: Cannon firings aim to save last bastion
May 20, 2010
The Nanaimo Museum and partner the Hudson’s Bay Company are stepping up their campaign to restore the 157-year-old Nanaimo Bastion — the last freestanding HBC bastion.
Daily cannon firings will take place at noon from May 21 until the Labour Day weekend, while on May 23 Zellers district manager Fred Hoppe will help create “Bastion Cannon Art” by firing two 19th-century cannons filled with paint. HBC began the fundraising campaign in March by making an $80,000 donation towards the $300,000 restoration project, while Nanaimo-area Bay, Zellers and Home Outfitters stores are selling cut-outs and tote bags this summer to help raise funds.
