Book Launch: "The Beast: Stories of Colonization, Exploration, and Determination"

1120 Grant Ave.
Winnipeg, MB
Apr 11, 2012 8:00 PM

Realizing that there was a gap in terms of historical fiction designed for young people that dealt with early exploration and colonization in Canada, 22 students from St. John’s-Ravenscourt School have taken it upon themselves to fill this void. The Beast looks at the exploration beginning with John Cabot in the 15th century until Franklin’s demise in the 19th century. The short stories are written from a variety of perspectives, from the explorers, first nations and indigenous people, women, and the marginalized.

The Beast is an example of students doing history. This is an exercise in student autonomy, by which students are creating and furthering their collective knowledge and then applying it in the real world in order to affect change in their society.

The Beast represents the landscape, European greed, the concept of the Northwest Passage, and a past that still needs to be reconciled.
