2011 Award Winners
Canada’s most passionate teachers are receiving top marks for creating interactive and novel lesson plans that literally turned their classrooms into time machines that transported their students hundreds of years into the past.
For bringing ‘history to life’ for their students, seven remarkable educators from Alberta, Quebec, Ontario, and Nova Scotia are receiving national recognition for bringing ‘history to life’ for their students. These passionate teachers encouraged their students to march back in time — starting 236 years ago — to re-enact the battle on the Plains of Abraham; create a video that delves into the tragic sinking of the Titanic; uncover ancient artefacts; document the historic contributions of Blacks in Canada; participate in commemorative military ceremonies; and explore Indigenous traditions and the history of residential schools.
For their unique teaching concepts, Canada’s History has selected the following seven educators as the recipients of the 2011 Governor General’s History Awards for Excellence in Teaching.
